Some of the benefits for individuals moving to Original Medicare are that there are no networks, no referrals, and very few prior authorizations. For folks who have spent years on employer and individual health plans with strict networks, this is often a welcome change. But you may wonder how your Everence Medicare supplement plan fits in.

When you purchase a Medicare supplement plan, Medicare remains your primary insurance and therefore drives all decisions around your care. Here are some examples:

  1. Will my Medicare supplement plan cover that service? Yes, as long as Medicare approves it.
  2. Will I have to submit claims to my Medicare supplement plan? No, claims automatically crossover from Medicare.
  3. Will a provider accept my Medicare supplement plan? Yes, as long as they accept Original Medicare.

It is important to know that this is not true for those in Medicare Advantage plans. As a replacement of Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans become the decision-makers when it comes to their members’ health care. That means they are allowed to impose networks, referrals, and prior authorizations that don’t exist within Original Medicare.

The number of available Medicare Advantage plans has increased in recent years, and this can cause confusion for both providers and for those seeking care.

Remember, if your health care provider lists Original Medicare as an acceptable insurance, they must accept your Everence Medicare supplement plan.

This is not only true for local providers, but any provider in the country that accepts Medicare. Remember, there are no networks with Original Medicare; as you travel in the United States, your Original Medicare and Medicare supplement plan travel with you.

If you are told that you cannot see a provider because they do not accept your Everence Medicare supplement insurance, here are some practical steps you can take:

  1. Ensure that the provider does accept Original Medicare.
  2. Clarify that you have a Medicare supplement plan and not a Medicare Advantage plan.
  3. Show them the back of your insurance card, which explains that claims automatically crossover from Medicare.
  4. Have them call the Member Services number on the back of your card to verify your coverage.
  5. If you are still having trouble, request that they simply schedule you with only your Original Medicare insurance on file. While it is helpful for them to know what supplement plan you have, it is not necessary for billing purposes.
