Since returning to her alma mater over a decade ago, Rachel Swartzendruber Miller, Ph.D., has helped push the Hesston College (Hesston, Kansas) mission forward in creative and exciting ways – including setting new institutional records in fundraising since taking college's advancement helm in 2019. Her passion for leadership development, Mennonite education and faith formation for all ages is honed by her intentional focus on self-awareness and continual curiosity. She is a graduate of Hesston College and Goshen (Indiana) College, has a master's degree in communication from Wichita (Kansas) State University and a Ph.D. in leadership with an emphasis in higher education administration from Andrews University (Berrien Springs, Michigan).

Dave’s background includes leadership positions in international economic development, higher education and public broadcasting. He earned a master’s degree in clinical psychology, a bachelor’s degree in business administration and holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® designation. Dave serves as chair of the church board at Grantham (Pennsylvania) Brethren in Christ Church, and is past president of the Susquehanna Valley Planned Giving Council.

Fueled by his passion to build an equitable economy in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Jaime Arroyo impressive career is a story in advancing inclusive entrepreneurship and ethical business as vehicles for economic prosperity. And since accepting the call to serve as their Chief Executive Officer, he has helped ASSETS become one of the top micro-lenders in Pennsylvania – and making Lancaster one of the most ethical business communities in the country. Arroyo earned his B.S in Business Administration from Millersville (Pennsylvania) University, and earned his MBA at Drexel University (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) with a concentration in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management. In addition, he is serving his first term as a Councilor for the City of Lancaster.

John Cortines oversees the Maclellan Foundation’s investments and strategies to catalyze a global movement of generosity among all believers. He began his career as a Petroleum Engineer with Chevron. While at Harvard Business School, he encountered a radical call from God to reframe his perspective on generosity and ultimately shift his career into the nonprofit sector. He previously served as COO of Generous Giving. Cortines is the coauthor of two books on biblical generosity (God and Money, and True Riches) which, together, have over 60,000 copies in circulation. He holds a MBA, M.S. in Geophysics, and B.S. in Chemical Engineering.

Colin Saxton couples two passionate concerns through his work. One is seeing the transforming power of generosity and faithful stewardship released in ways that change lives. The second is building partnerships with churches and organizations to free them to demonstrate the love of God to a watching world. For the past 35 years, Saxton served the Quaker community as a pastor, adjunct professor, Yearly Meeting superintendent, and General Secretary of Friends United Meeting. He earned his master's degree from Eastern Mennonite Seminary (Harrisonburg, Virginia) and D.Min. in leadership and spiritual formation from George Fox Evangelical Seminary (Portland, Oregon). He's written for several publications, including books through Friends United Press. His blog, Walking in the Way and Stumbling Toward Faithfulness, is found at walkingintheway.blog.

Pre-conference session

Development professionals are no stranger to stress, long days, and full plates. Managing self takes into account self-care, self-awareness, staying curious to new ways of learning and growing, and more. We will "spend time on the balcony" exploring new strategies for making real progress on the most difficult challenges. You will leave with a better understanding of what managing self looks like from your unique perspective, as well as increased clarity on how to differentiate and navigate adaptive versus technical challenges. Reset, Rebuild, Reimagine: Turning Obstacles into Opportunities for Your Organization

Jaime Arroyo, CEO of ASSETS, will walk through his first year as CEO – a transformative year for the organization. As Jaime reflects on lessons learned during this time of rebuilding, he shares how he reconnected with his “why,” detailing his experience as an 11-year-old walking into a barbershop that exposed him to life-changing entrepreneurship. Calling All Heroes

General session

Explore the divergent views of donor-centered fundraising and community-centered fundraising. Who is the true hero in the nonprofit story? This talk shares the real-life story of a 13-month-old diagnosed with retinoblastoma (cancer of the eye). Through Kam’s journey, his grandfather, a fundraiser, searches for the true hero in Kam’s family quest to save not only his vision, but his very life. When you examine the strengths, passions, and impact of each possible hero, including fundraisers who raise the money for cancer research and treatment, it becomes clear – it takes all of us. The problems we seek to solve are too big for any single hero. Take inspiration from the Justice League; heroes are stronger when they work together.

Qualifying Donors and Prospects

Identify donors able to make leadership-level or transformational gifts. Through an interactive discussion, establish how to reach potential major gift donors, secure an initial meeting with potential leadership-level donors, understand the five-meeting model of major gifts with a focus on the initial meeting as discovery/qualification, and have open-ended questions that unlock thoughtful conversations about philanthropy. Giving Societies to Advance your Annual Fund

Giving societies are designed to help develop donors, keep them faithful to the nonprofit, and inspire them to give more (larger) gifts. Focus on the why and how of creating a giving society at your organization, no matter the size of your development staff. Donors love your organization’s mission and want to partner with you in making communities stronger. Join Elyse Kauffman as you consider major gifts and planned giving challenges. Difficult Conversations in the 'Bored' Room

The key to an active and engaged Board of Directors is to leverage the talent of your board members, while maximizing their available time. Cultivating a Culture of Philanthropy

Cultivate a culture of philanthropy. Help established organizations think intentionally about an organizational culture of philanthropy. This case study from MCC is based on a Doctor of Ministry Project through Fuller Theological Seminary. The end result was creating an online training course for staff and board members to have shared language around generosity and philanthropy. This workshop explores myths of planned giving and the tools to rejuvenate your efforts. Stop Obsessing over the Gift 'Vehicles'

Most fundraisers are reluctant to offer noncash gift options to their donors if they are unsure of how to work the vehicle it is delivered in. This prevents them from maximizing their true fundraising potential because they ignore planned giving options. It does the donor a disservice by not giving options to have a bigger impact to accomplish their financial goals.
